Kaleriya Krupina. KITSCH AS A COMPONENT OF MODERN MASS CULTURE

An analysis of the causes of a widespread component of mass culture, known as “kitsch”. The author compares kitsch with some modern subcultures, popular among the masses, analyzes similar features, differences, and inter-connections. Art in the postmodern period is examined, gradually supplanting the foundations of classical culture and reducing the intellectual level of a major part of the population. The phenomenon is emphasized of capturing mass consumer consciousness as a result of the global commercialization of kitsch and other streams of mass culture. The important question: “did kitsch exist in the early cultural development of Europe or is this a product of the era of capitalism?” has no definite answer.

Pushkin’s jubilee celebrations in the Tsarist Russia, the USSR, and the Russian Federation and abroad are described.

Yakov Berdichevskii. FROM THE NOTEBOOK OF A BOOK-PROSPECTOR

The eighth “Book-Prospector”,just as its predecessors, is concise, following the classic precept: to write so that it will be less of words and a lot of thoughts, without imposing the author’s own perceptions — only the factual material. The episodes are not related to each other, they are chronologically distant from each other (from the 17^th to the mid-20^th Century). One thing unites them — the closely intertwined fate of books and the fate of people, and this is what we refer to by such a beloved word “bibliophilia”. Here is we found the interest of the interest of the German Emperor Wilhelm II to a rare edition of “Peter Simile”, to the most valuable — one of the 25 illuminated — copy of Pushkin’s “Gavriiliada”, embellished by a German artist and published in Berlin, and a book from the library of the old noble family of Sulima tells the complicated history of its owner. Garold Zlochevskii. RARE EDITION ABOUT MOSCOW

Devoted to a rare book by S.M.Liubetskii, “The Old Times of Moscow and the Russian People in the Historical Correlation with the Domestic Life of the Russians...” (Moscow, 1872), which “opened” the ancient city to its residents and guests. The book contains the dedicatory inscription of I.M.Sarkizov-Serazini, doctor of medical sciences. Unti 1917, the book belonged to the Library of the Moscow German club — the stamp (in German) on the title page. The author briefly describes the history of this club, its library, and the library catalogues in Russian, German, and French.

The author collected postcards from various countries as evidence of continuing interest in the image of the Saint. The author’s selection of banknotes and bookplates reproducing the image of Saint George confirms this statement.

The article, written by the organizer and leader of the visit, the eminent bibliophile and collector of bookplates, contains the interesting assessment of the modern Russian bibliophilia.
