Alexander Gromov. RUSSIAN THEME IN THE ACTIVITIES OF THE AMERICAN PUBLISHING HOUSE "THE LIMITED EDITIONS CLUB"

The author gives a short account of the history of the American publishing house “The Limited Editions Club’, which operated for more than 80 years. Out of 600 books published, 30 were by eight Russian and Soviet authors and one collection of Russian fairy tales, 37 books in total. The article is devoted to these books, their structure, design, artists and basic characteristics.

The article relates a story about M. Gorky, who first gave Z.I. Grzhebin his consent to participate in the Historical-Revolutionary Almanac and wrote the article “The 9th ofJanuary” for it. But then he decided not to participate in the almanac and other editions of “The Shipovnik” and asked for the return of his manuscript. The publisher acceded to the request.

The memoirs of S.A. Regirer were not intended for publication. But they contain unique descriptions of “people and books” of the Soviet and in particular Moscow book world in the second part of the 20th century. It is a kind of encyclopedia on the subject. Among other things, the author offers his own view of a “simply” intelligent and active collector of a large private library with regard to a narrowly perceived bibliophilia (collecting of rare and valuable editions). This is not “a life for the book” but a life unthinkable without books.
